Which types of transport can I use in the Netherlands with my ISIC/OV-chipkaart?
You can make use of all public transport in the Netherlands. This includes the train, tram, subway and bus. The only thing you have to do before travelling is to load credit on your card.
How does it work?
Please note that you will always need sufficient credit to use your OV-chipkaart. When you travel on credit, a boarding fare will be debited from your card when you check in. When you check out, the boarding fare will be refunded and you will be charged for the number of kilometres you travelled. If you do not check out, you will pay the full boarding fare.
Is the ISIC/OV-chipkaart also my discount card for all the ISIC student benefits?
No, the ISIC/OV-chipkaart (blue card) is for travelling by public transport. For all the other benefits, you use the ISIC digital card.

On the yellow NS ticket machine at the train station you can check the last 10 travel transactions of your ISIC/OV-chipkaart. Follow the instructions below:

How to start travelling with the ISIC/OV-chipkaart with discount?
Before you can travel with the card, you need to load credit or link your card to your creditcard. Follow the instructions at 'How do I load credit on the ISIC/OV-chipkaart'. What to do if you forgot to check-in?
If you realize that you have forgotten to check in with your OV-chipkaart after walking past the gates, try to go back and do so before you enter the train. Otherwise the conductor may issue a fine because you do not have a valid ticket. Make sure that you check in at an NS pole, or at the check-in side of the gate. Are you already on the train? Then report to the conductor.
The fine you receive for not checking-in is for your own expense. The reason for this is that when you do not check-in, you don't pay for your transportation.
What to do if you forgot to check-out?
If you forget to check out, go back to the location where you forgot to check out and hold your card in front of the reader. If this is too late (and not possible anymore), the public transport provider charges a fixed fee for the trip.
If you have forgotten to check out after your train journey, then you can still check out for up to 6 hours afterwards at any NS pole or gate. Make sure you do this on the check-out side of the gate.
I forgot to check out. How do I request a refund of my credit?
Apply for a credit refund in three simple steps via uitcheckgemist.nl
You can do this if you did not check in or out on the bus, train, tram or metro. You enter which stop or which station you got on or off at. We will then calculate what the journey cost. If you have overpaid, you will receive a credit refund. You can then add this to your OV-chipkaart at a pick-up device.
It can sometimes take a while for the journey to appear. In most cases this will be within 15 days.
I have lost my card or someone stole my card, what can I do?
Contact the ISIC OV-chipkaart team via e-mail [email protected] (08:00 AM – 18:00 PM) and report to us that your card is missing. Please contact ISIC Netherlands for a new ISIC/OV-chipkaart.
Can I get a refund of the credit that was on the lost OV-chipkaart?
Unfortunately we can not refund credit that was on the OV-chipkaart at the time you lost your card so treat your card carefully.
Help, my card is not working, what now?
We apologize for this inconvenience. Contact the ISIC/OV-chipkaart team via e-mail [email protected] (08:00 AM – 18:00 PM) and report to us that your card is not working. We will take a look into our systems to see if there is a problem with the card.
Are there any subscriptions for the ISIC/OV-chipkaart?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to combine the ISIC/OV-chipkaart with discounts except for the 15% discount.
I am not able to pick-up my ISIC card during the introduction day.
