Frequently asked questions about the ISIC Mobility card

GENERAL

Which types of transport can I use in the Netherlands with my ISIC Mobility card?
You can make use of all public transport in the Netherlands. This includes the train, tram, subway and bus. The only thing you have to do before travelling is to load credit on your card.

How does it work?
Please note that you will always need sufficient credit to use your OV-chipkaart. When you travel on credit, a boarding fare will be debited from your card when you check in. When you check out, the boarding fare will be refunded and you will be charged for the number of kilometres you travelled. If you do not check out, you will pay the full boarding fare.

Is the ISIC Mobility card also my discount card for all the ISIC student benefits?
No, the ISIC Mobility card (blue card) is for travelling by public transport. For all the other benefits, you use the ISIC digital card.

Where can I check the transactions I have made?
On the yellow NS ticket machine at the train station you can check the last 10 travel transactions of your ISIC Mobility card Follow the instructions below:

  1. Hold your card against the card reader with the pink OV-chipkaart logo

How to travel with the ISIC Mobility card?
You can use your card for all public transport in the Netherlands. While travelling it is important that you use the card as the locals do. This means that:

  • Every time you enter or leave a vehicle, you must check-in or check-out. When your trip includes a change of vehicles, you have to check out at the first vehicle and check in at the next one.
  • Check in and out at the station or pole from the travel company you wish to travel with (NS, GVB, Veolia, Connection etc.)
  • To check-in, you hold your card in front of the card reader. Readers are placed at the entrances and exits of all trams and buses. When you check-in, you will hear one beep and see a green light. When you check out, you will hear two beeps.
  • When you arrive at a subway or a train station, hold your card in front of the card reader that is built into the subway/train gate. The gate will open. You check out in the same way at the station where you exit the metro or train system.

Our OV-system sounds more complicated than it is so let us show you with a short example. In this scenario, you first travel by train and then by bus:

PROBLEMS

What to do if you forgot to check-in?
If you realize that you have forgotten to check in with your ISIC Mobility card after walking past the gates, try to go back and do so before you enter the train. Otherwise the conductor may issue a fine because you do not have a valid ticket. Make sure that you check in at an NS pole, or at the check-in side of the gate. Are you already on the train? Then report to the conductor.

The fine you receive for not checking-in is for your own expense. The reason for this is that when you do not check-in, you don't pay for your transportation.

What to do if you forgot to check-out?
If you forget to check out, go back to the location where you forgot to check out and hold your card in front of the reader. If this is too late (and not possible anymore), the public transport provider charges a fixed fee for the trip.

If you have forgotten to check out after your train journey, then you can still check out for up to 6 hours afterwards at any NS pole or gate. Make sure you do this on the check-out side of the gate.

I forgot to check out. How do I request a refund of my credit?
Apply for a credit refund in three simple steps via uitcheckgemist.nl

You can do this if you did not check in or out on the bus, train, tram or metro. You enter which stop or which station you got on or off at. We will then calculate what the journey cost. If you have overpaid, you will receive a credit refund. You can then add this to your ISIC Mobility card at a pick-up device.

It can sometimes take a while for the journey to appear. In most cases this will be within 15 days.
